Your Guide to Free Summer Music Festivals This July in Washington, DC

There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats.

The nation’s capital is a hustling bustling place come the summer months with something to offer everyone. Packed with family friendly and free events for the young at heart, Washington DC knows how to make the most of the warm weather.

With hearty laughs and fun events happening all over the city, Washington DC is the place to be in the summers.

If you’re a music lover looking to let loose and enjoy some free concerts; or you’re out with your friends and are looking for a good time without spending too much money; or even if you just enjoy listening to good live music, we’ve got some great news for you. The summer months bring with them a number of free music festivals for all and sundry.

Here are some you just can’t afford to miss!

The Smithsonian Folklife Festival

Dates: June 27th – July 1st and July 4th – 8th

Hosted by the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, The Smithsonian Folklife Festival is in full swing! Established in 1967, the festival honors contemporary cultural traditions and is a festival to celebrate cultural heritage.

The theme for this year is focused around the Armenian and Catalonian cultures, and the free festival brings together various aspects of the culture, like the art, food and the music to the public.

The festival offers a number of free and paid musical events by artists hailing both from the themed countries, as well as American born and bred artists.

Join the event on July 8th at the National Mall to enjoy a night of revelry with women artists paying a tribute to the Sisterfire festivals in the form of free concerts and spoken word sessions.

Artscape

Dates: July 20th-22nd, 2018

Featuring artists and vendors from all over the city and boasting live concerts on three outdoor stages, Artscape is the place to be! America’s largest free festival offers 3 days of festivity on behalf of the Baltimore Festival of the Arts, Inc. With experimental music, street dance, jazz, opera and classical music events to choose from, music lovers of any kind are bound to find exactly what they need! Visit artscape.org for more information.

Vans Warped Tour

Date: 29th July

Lovers of more alternative kinds of music like punk rock, hip-hop, ska, electronic and hardcore among others will love this event! Popular as the “punk rock summer camp on wheels”, the tour features artists such as 3OH!3, All Time Low, Black Veil Brides, Movements, August Burns Red and more.

This may be your last chance at catching one of the famous Vans Warped Tour shows as 2018 marks the end of the full cross country runs of the tour!

Head on over to the Merriweather Post Pavilion for a day of festivity and excellent music and bring out the rocker in you! Visit vanswarpedtour.com for more information.

This list for the best summer music festivals to head to is by no means exhaustive! Washington DC also offers a number of paid live concerts playing in the upcoming months by major artists such as Diplo, DJ Snake, Foster the People and many more!
